Mission Statement

The Mission of "The Friends of the Benzie Shores District Library" is to support the Library , its services and programs through advocacy, fundraising, and volunteers. The Friends are dedicated to the goal of making our Library the best through community awareness and involvement.


The Friends Welcome You!

And we ask you to please join us!!

Your dues and support will accomplish much for the Library and the community. How do you join the Friends?

    1. Simply print out and fill in the membership form.
         - OR -
      Pick up a membership envelope at the Library.
    2. Decide on your level of membership or contribution. Note: contributions of $100 or more to the Endowment Fund also entitle you to membership, and your contribution will be eligible for a Michigan State Income Tax Credit.
    3. Make a check payable to...
      • Members: "Friends of the Benzie Shores District Library."
      • Contributors to the Endowment Fund: "GTRCF" – which is the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. Write "Friends of the Benzie Shores Library Fund" in the memo line of the check.
    4. Drop off or mail to:

What Do the Friends Do?

The Friends provide financial support for various programs, projects, and equipment purchases that make the Library a more complete community resource.

Here are some of what the Friends have done lately (or are doing) for the Library:

  • Published periodically the Benzie Shores District Library Shorelines newsletter.
  • Provided matching funds for the "Value Line" and "Morningstar" subscriptions.
  • Provided Computer magazine and Health Letter subscriptions.
  • Provided a significant "Reference Collection" through the Duncan Memorial Fund.
  • Purchased and maintained the Library landscaping.
  • Provide ongoing financial support for: the: "Reflections by the Bay" program series, Summer Story Hours, and Summer Reading Programs.

How Can the Friends Do What They Do?

The Friends ability to support our commitments to the Library is based on our membership dues, donations, and fundraising projects.

  • The Friends have the following items for sale as a fundraiser:

    • Prints from Historical Photos
    • Antique 1904 Frankfort Harbor Map
    • Commemorative Hot Plate Tiles
    • Famous Author Cookbooks
    • Three Ships Posters.

  • The Friends hold an Annual Used Book Sale on the third Saturday in August. It is a major fundraiser.

    • Book donations are appreciated at any time. Please bring them to the Library or call for pick up.


Contribute to the Endowment Fund

Contributions to the Endowment Fund help to insure the continued viability of the Friends and the Library, while providing the donor with a Michigan income tax credit. Note: Contributions of $100 or more to the Endowment Fund also entitle you to membership – see Join the Friends.

There are three ways to contribute to the Endowment Fund:

Important Information About The Friends Organization

  • The Friends of the Benzie Shores District Library is a 501(c)(3) organization.
  • The Friends membership year and fiscal year are the calendar year January to December.
  • The Friends Annual Meeting and election of officers is held in the month of June, the actual date will be posted in advance.
  • The Friends Board, when business requires, will meet on the third Thursday of the month at 9:30 A.M. in the Library.
  • The Friends membership is comprised of all those who are current with their dues.
  • The Friends Board is made up of four officers and two or more trustees, each elected for a one year term.
  • Members of the current Friends Board are:
